Jesse

Jesse A. Mejia has taken his own experience in the MBA application process and used that success as the basis for founding MBA Catalyst. A nationally known business leader, Jesse has been quoted by the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and has been a featured guest on National Public Radio’s "Talk of the Nation" in its "The Art and Science of Motivation" segment. Jesse is also an award-winning speaker, ranked as one of Toastmasters International's top humorist speakers in 2009 and 2010.

The son of Salvadoran immigrants, Jesse is a first generation Latino who was born and raised in the high crime, drug and gang infested areas of South-Central Los Angeles. As a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Syracuse University (B.S. in Communications) and Georgetown University (MBA), Jesse developed strategies to successfully bridge the two distinct worlds of being raised in an immigrant household (where neither parent spoke English nor had more than a few years of education), and studying at top tier institutions as well as working for multinational corporations (Dun & Bradstreet, General Motors, Volkswagen Group of America).

Jesse's passion to motivate and help others to achieve success inspired him to start his own company, MBA Catalyst, designed to guide ambitious individuals on how to effectively apply to business school and earn their MBA. Since 2007, MBA Catalyst has helped candidates gain admission to top tier MBA programs, and numerous clients have received fellowships from The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management.

A Message From Our Founder

Every year, I am asked by either a prospective client, a friend, or a business school admissions officer why I chose to start a company like MBA Catalyst. And each year, I give the same answer: “Because I wish someone had been there to help me when I applied to business school.”

I applied to business school at age 26. The emotional roller coaster of studying for the GMAT, retaking the GMAT multiple times, writing and rewriting essays and preparing for interviews was both a humbling and transformative experience.

Applying to business school was hard. There's no way of sugar-coating the experience. But I made it through and achieved my goal of gaining admission to a top business school. After overcoming various setbacks and pushing forward with will and determination, I enrolled at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in the fall of 2001. My path to business school was not easy, but it taught me something fundamental about the process that I can now share with my clients.

While at Georgetown, I became highly involved with the admissions office, learning how acceptance and rejection decisions are made. I personally interviewed over 100 applicants and witnessed first-hand how others were able to successfully overcome professional and academic blemishes by taking control of their personal story. In time, I learned how to master this skill and slowly began helping friends who were previously rejected from business school, giving them necessary encouragement and insight on how to re-position their applications and get accepted to top business schools.

Once my previously rejected friends began to receive acceptance letters from schools like Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, and NYU, word travelled fast. I started to receive cold calls from prospective students (whom I had never met) asking for help re-applying to business school. I now help people from across the country who are seeking advice on business school admissions. I invite you to learn more about my company, and you will find out that at MBA Catalyst, we are all about Igniting Success!
